With all that is going on in the world, the injustice, intolerable killing of innocent children and people, wars and rumours of war, corruption in so many places and Christian values fading into the night, it is easy to get discouraged and feel that we’re on a roller coaster that we never asked to be on. But Jesus told us that these things would happen and that we are not to get discouraged. That takes action on our part. Passiveness is not our operating mode when it comes to God’s righteousness and our eternal hope.
I noticed that even when Jesus was with the Apostles (and after) that they sang hymns. There are some beautiful Christian hymns readily available on YouTube, play them whenever you get a chance. Christian radio stations are another option and of course Christian music via a headset or earphones. Listening to music that gives praise to God lifts our spirit. Praise God whenever the opportunity avails itself. Do it!
And show God’s love, no matter how small and insignificant it may seem at the time, to encourage or lift up others. A kind word or action to others less fortunate. A word of encouragement or praise to our young people, a word of thanks and a hug to those we love. Be thankful for the grace and blessings that God has given us. There are limitless opportunities to thank God for His love and show it. There is such a need all around us. Do it!
Take the time to kneel in prayer or if kneeling isn’t an option a silent prayer always is. We can pray to our Father anytime. We have an advocate with the Father, Christ Jesus. Pray for our families, our neighbours, our church brothers and sisters, our Pastor, those who are going through trials, those who govern us. There is a seemingly endless list. Do it!
When I was in the military I used to keep a Bible on my desk (great conversation starter!). I remember one of my work mates telling me that I was programming myself and I didn’t disagree with him because it is true. I asked him what he programmed himself with. What we put ourselves in front of is what moulds us, whether we acknowledge it or not. We do have God’s sure Word. Does your spirit need lifting ? Go to God’s Word. Do it!
Isaiah 41:10 – So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Psalm 16:8 – I keep my eyes always on the LORD. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
1 Peter 5:7 – Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
John 16:33 – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
