Do Not Be Carried Away

Hebrews 13:9 KJV Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.”

Or as the NIV Bible puts it: “Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by eating ceremonial foods, which is of no benefit to those who do so.”

I know of no concern that troubles me more than the strange doctrines that are invading the Church today.  And there is a reason why this is happening. God’s people are moving away from His Word, moving from grace and looking for experience, for signs and wonders. They are being sold a strong delusion and buying into it in groves.

Matthew 22:29 NIVJesus replied, You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIVAll Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,  so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Acts 17:11 NIVNow the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”

Revelation 2:18-25 NIV

18 “To the angel of the church in Thyatira write:

These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. 21 I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. 24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, 25 except to hold on to what you have until I come.’

The Greek word here for Jezebel is a synonym for a “false teacher.” She clearly represents false doctrines. Jesus clears up any possible misunderstanding by continuing, “to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets (Revelation 2:24).

So what Jesus is talking about is false doctrine, the Bible does not actually mention a Jezebel spirit, although there are some who allude to this, the Scriptures do however have plenty to say about Jezebel herself and of course, false doctrine.

And as with any sexual immorality implications, there are always spiritual immorality implications.

So here is a group of God’s people, full of good works and charity, having a form of faith and patience. But with all that is good and commendable, something very dangerous is going on, something so seductive that Christ warns He will send judgment and make them an example to all the churches. Certain members of the church were selling out to Satan. Their good works, charity, service, faith and patience were overshadowed by a seduction of false doctrine. They were under the spell of a false teaching, a teaching that came disguised as the true Word but was, in fact, evil.

I’ve already expounded upon the deception of the New Apostolic Reformation and it’s influence and rapid growth around the world, but it doesn’t stop there. Deception is rampant because knowledge in God’s Word is being diminished. The sheep are not spending the necessary time to feed on His Word and the wolves are entering into the flock unchecked.

2 Timothy 4:3 NIV says through the words of the Apostle Paul to Timothy: “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.”

1 Corinthians 3:10-11 NIV: “By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

When you study God’s Word, it takes root within your spirit and when you run across something that someone says that doesn’t ring true with God’s Word, the Holy Spirit within you will bear witness to this. But in order for this to be a personal reality of yours, you need God’s Word within you. We’re all getting used to fast food and God wants you to dine on His Word, a full three or five course meal. Fast food does not give you the spiritual nourishment that you need with it’s attractive packaging and alluring speedy delivery. There is no alternative to feeding on God’s solid Word, we need His Word daily.

Ephesians 4:13-15 NIV :”until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”

Titus 2:10-15 ASV:” not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world; looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works. These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

These things speak, these thing exhort, these thing reprove with all authority.

This is the doctrine of God. This is a little different from the false doctrines that proliferate some of our Churches today isn’t it? Do you ever wonder why that is?

If you haven’t been spending the time you need in God’s Word, please consider doing so because it is our daily bread and we need God’s Word to rest in His Grace.

Worthy is the Lamb! Blessings!

  2. I’m with you, Bruce! I have such a passion for people to come to fully know God’s Word. So much that is out there reads more like “self-help”… I’ve been so encouraged by your blog and through you, to be introduced to a community of believers who truly treasure God’s Word. God bless you!

  3. Doctrine is important Bruce. Without sound biblical grounding we are so easily led astray. It is God’s word which will keep us. Thanks for the reminder to keep feeding on it every day!!

  4. Bruce, Thank you so much for what you wrote here. There are so many wolves in sheep’s clothing in our churches, and false doctrine is running rampant in most, it would appear. I believe it is because the church, for the large part, has been turned into a business of men, and it is being marketed as such, and so the leaders of these churches are buying into men’s marketing schemes for the church. And, they are making many of their decisions for the church based upon the wants of their customer base (the world) and in order to please them, and sadly, in so many cases, without regard for whether or not it pleases God. The church, at large, has become so worldly, and a large percentage of the pastors are addicted to pornography, as well as probably are a large part of their congregations, so Jezebel is definitely present in today’s modern business-model churches. We are in great need of a real revival of God in the church. And, so I pray to that end. Sue
