Book Review: Preparing the Way—The Reopening of the John G. Lake Healing Rooms in Spokane, Washington

Those of you that follow my blog know that I have published a number of articles detailing the background history, the doctrines and the connection of the IAHR with the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) movement. These articles regarding IAHR can be viewed here, here, here and here.

This additional post is a critique on the book that Cal Pierce authored entitled “Preparing the Way“.  The author notes a significant number of discrepancies from Cal Pierce’s book and the author was personally raised in “Medical Lake”, which plays a significant role in Cal Pierce’s story. The direct link to this critique is below. It’s a little lengthy but the author’s observations and direct quotes from Cal Pierce’s book are or should be eye opening to anyone who has earnestly studied God’s Word..

And while I’m at it, I’d like to show you the “Bethel Glory Cloud” video that was recently released. This is where a “Glory” cloud and gold dust appeared in one of their services on 2011 at Bethel Church in Redding, CA. Did I mention that Bethel Church was the church that Cal Pierce was on the Board of Directors as he confirms in his book “Preparing the Way”?

No, you won’t find any “gold dust” in the Bible falling from the air above and any association with God’s Glory Cloud or presence in the Bible is a far cry from what was manifested here but let’s not nick pick and just go with the flow…..

The term glory cloud is not found anywhere in Scripture, and many rightly wonder whether such a thing is biblical. It is significant that the “proof texts” for a glory cloud come entirely from the Old Testament. The New Testament contains no examples of God manifesting Himself in such a cloud. Since the church lives under the New Testament covenant, we have no basis for believing such a phenomenon to be a genuine work of God.

The first biblical reference to God’s presence in a cloud is found in Exodus 13:21. As the Israelites moved toward the Promised Land, “the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night.” Exodus 40:35 associates the cloud with God’s glory: “And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.” In order for it to fill the tabernacle, the “glory of the Lord” must have had a physical manifestation recognizable to the people. However, there is no indication in Scripture that the clouds were glittery or filled with golden dust. In fact, every time gold or jewels are mentioned in connection with God, they are always of the purest variety. No independent gemologist has ever verified that any element produced in these services is authentic.

And yet here we see people standing and observing with no difficulty, some even taking videos on the smart phones. The Bible clearly states that evil spirits or demons can manifest themselves as “angels of light”. (2 Corinthians 11:13-15 NIV) yet no one questions, no one takes the time to validate this manifestation in God’s Word. As the young man at the beginning of this video states, “I live for these moments”.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 NIV  “The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.”

Can anyone really check out Cal Pierce’s story and not see how it is filled with conclusions that are not validated in scripture? Is there one example given whereby any of these angelic visitations are challenged with the test to determine as to whether they originate from God? (1 John 4:1-2 NIV)

And the teachings of the NAR, are they not contained within the courses that all who wish to be a “Healing Room Director” must complete and agree to adhere to? And are those who wish to become volunteers not all trained in the IAHR Healing Rooms Model of Ministry, authored by Cal Pierce?

Does no one take the time to look at the books that Cal Pierce has authored? Do these books not proliferate the doctrines of the NAR?

Matthew 7:21-23 NIV “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Galatians 1:6-9 NIV  “ I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—  which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!”

The subtlety of the Healings Rooms movement is that it looks so innocent. “We’re just praying for people to be healed”, which is totally scriptural. However, what is not looked at is the doctrines behind the compulsory instruction the volunteers are required to take, the shift to a different Gospel, where delivery from demons is emphasized, where healing for all is proclaimed, where Apostolic authority is inferred and innocent people are deliberately led into lawlessness.

And what is lawlessness? It’s where angelic visitations are accepted without question. It’s where scriptures are twisted to validate false doctrine and accepted without investigation, it’s where people let self pride over ride their dependency on Christ and place their participation in, of greater value. It’s where the righteousness of God is exchanged for signs and wonders such as being the vessel by which God supposedly heals someone through or being slain in the spirit or holy laughter or literally anything that manifests itself which then becomes acceptable so long as it validates those who are leading and participating in this deception. It is darkness.

1 Timothy 4:1 NIV  “The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.”

And what has light to do with darkness?

Ephesians 5:11 NIV  “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”

So my question to the Directors and volunteers of IAHR is, if you’ve really checked into this, that’s great but if you haven’t, why haven’t you? But even more important, considering the tree from which this fruit falls, what exactly is it that’s keeping you there?

Worthy is the Lamb! Blessings!

  2. I’m speechless. Literally. I believe God will not let this and things like it go without judgment.

The Bible says that judgment begins with the house of the Lord. That’s just one more reason to believe in a pre-wrath rapture that will take place at the sixth seal, immediately following the tribulation. The tribulation will be a time of purifying for the church, as well as a time of great apostasy for those professing Christ in word only.

    Well written. Thank you.
