Take My Yoke Upon You

yoke

Matthew 11:29-30 NIV  “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Gotquestions.org has a excellent overview on this particular passage that you can read here. In fact, I think their overview addresses the context and meaning behind these words that Jesus said very well.

I often say my prayers out loud when I am walking along and there are times when I’m praying and pouring out my heart to God that I imagine that He is walking beside me, much like the picture that is above. I am yoked to Him because of my dependency on Him, not to mention that He is God and He knows exactly what I am going through and what direction I need, whereas I sometimes don’t. It’s comforting to know that I can depend on Him and to know that He will guide me as long as I stay close to Him.

You can call that mentality simplistic if you want but it works for me. I’ve come to realize that I’m not near as smart as I think I am and that His will for me is always much better than my own. The short story is I need His guidance in every minute of every hour of every day that He gives me. I tell Him about all the things that I know I need help on (that He already knows), which in reality covers a lot, and the scary part is that there are many areas where I also need His help that I am not even aware of, but that’s OK because He’s got me covered there too. It’s hard to put into words but His love is really consuming and there is so much peace being in His care. He is the shepherd, I am the sheep. Once you grasp that concept and realize the reality of it, everything else is taken care of. God is faithful.

There is such joy and inner peace being in His presence. He helps me with the words that come out of my mouth when I’m mindful of Him. He provides the motivation and love that I have and feel for my family and friends. He helps me many times to go the extra mile. Sometimes it’s noticed, sometimes it’s not but it doesn’t matter, He notices and that is what is important. Jesus told us that He always would be with us (Matthew 28:18-20 NIV). We really need to take that to heart. He is always there for us, by our side, and in us, if we invite Him in and if we allow Him to be.

I should probably clear up a possible misunderstanding. Don’t read into these words that I write on this blog, more than there is. I’m just an ordinary guy. I don’t have any halo over my head, there’s nothing special about me at all. I’m in my twilight years now and it took me a long time to get where I am. I’m just so glad that I got to where I am. I’m far from being perfect but I’m a heck of a lot different from what I used to be. There’s so many things that I see differently now, not only in myself, but also in others. God is willing to provide so much grace, if we’d only accept what He’s willing to give.

If you’re rebelling and pursuing self, or in denial, you’re fighting a battle you can never win. If you’re going it alone, don’t do it, it really is wasted time. We’re all really prodigal sons and daughters when you stop to think about it. Go home and let the rejoicing begin. Yoke yourself to Jesus, let Him lead you and direct your steps, let Him lift the burden that you carry.

Worthy is the Lamb! Blessings!

I think Bruce Cooper has a pretty good overview of this passage.
Paul speaks about the reality of the mystery that was hidden, “Christ IN US, the hope of glory”
A profound reality is this Truth, Jesus Christ IN US. Unfortunately, many profound Truth’s become platitudes or cultish cliche’s.
Jesus Himself professed that the Kingdom of Heaven is within, The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. He also spoke to the woman at the well about well of water springing up into eternal life.
Imagine that, a well of water springing up from within.
The yoke of Jesus Christ is indeed easy, as He goes before us clears the way. It’s not there’s never any struggles, but as you say, Jesus IS faithful and always with us, there’s no where to hide but in His huge loving hands.
I encourage all to get to the point that when they look for Jesus, they would look within themselves.
For that is where Jesus wants to be. Sitting as King on the throne of our hearts. You get yoked up with an earthly king, I can assure you the burden will be heavy.

May The kingdom Heaven flow up from within you Bruce that your Light may shine bright.
PS I was working at Griesbach this week and couldn’t help but think of you.
