The reposted article below is authored by Steven Mattson, an American Christian, written to American Christians. I am not an American, as I was born and raised and live in Canada, but I am a Christian and there are very few of us, if any, that don’t have politics cross our paths. And the mandate that Steven identifies for American Christians, affects all of us, regardless of our political affiliations or the country that we live in.
If I ruffle any feathers, I am sorry, that is not my intend, nor do I honestly think that it is Steven’s. What I do think is Steven’s intent, is to remind all of us that our mandate from Jesus, is the Great Commission that He gave to all of us, and that it supersedes all others, including whatever political mandate we may follow and if we lose sight of that, and the commandments that He gave us, we are in danger of losing it all.
I know this is an extremely complex subject, with volatile sub-issues such as abortion, immigration and many other policies at the forefront of our consciousness, and our emotions can and do easily become involved. But when our reliance on the Holy Spirit is exchanged for legislative control and secular power, when treasures in heaven are discarded for riches on earth, when spiritual truths are exchanged for administrative policies, and executive orders are prioritized over the commands of Jesus, instead of providing hope and joy, Christians may become complicit in replacing the good news of the Gospel with fear-mongering, xenophobia, misogyny, and racist rhetoric. And make no mistake, the unbelieving world sees this.
Martin Luther King stated that “Morality cannot be legislated, but behavior can be regulated. Judicial decrees may not change the heart, but they can restrain the heartless.” There is no denying that from a political perspective, we, as Christians, are called to work towards those ends, but not at the expense of abandoning the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If there is division within our nations it is partially because the Christian Church, as a whole, has failed to adequately reach our nations with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Bringing in legislation that endeavours to counteract that reality isn’t going to change the hearts of those who are not saved. It may indeed restrain, but it will not change hearts. Jesus said that without Me, you can do nothing (John 15:5 NASB). A house built on sand will not stand (Matthew 7:24-27 NASB). This is basic Christianity 101. We’re putting the cart before the horse.
I honestly mean no disrespect to anyone, American or Canadian.
Bandaids only cover a wound, they do not necessarily heal the wound, especially if it has not been cleaned and our nations are indeed wounded and applying bandaids are not going to resolve the core issues that our nations face, namely that as nations, we collectively, are turning even more progressively away from God, than we previously were. The Bible tells us that there will be a great falling away and we are seeing it unfold before our very eyes.
