Christianity Is Neither Democratic nor Republican—It’s Better Than Both | Steven Mattson

The reposted article below is authored by Steven Mattson, an American Christian, written to American Christians. I am not an American, as I was born and raised and live in Canada, but I am a Christian and there are very few of us, if any, that don’t have politics cross our paths. And the mandate that Steven identifies for American Christians, affects all of us, regardless of our political affiliations or the country that we live in.

If I ruffle any feathers, I am sorry, that is not my intend, nor do I honestly think that it is Steven’s. What I do think is Steven’s intent, is to remind all of us that our mandate from Jesus, is the Great Commission that He gave to all of us, and that it supersedes all others, including whatever political mandate we may follow and if we lose sight of that, and the commandments that He gave us, we are in danger of losing it all.

I know this is an extremely complex subject, with volatile sub-issues such as abortion, immigration and many other policies at the forefront of our consciousness, and our emotions can and do easily become involved. But when our reliance on the Holy Spirit is exchanged for legislative control and secular power, when treasures in heaven are discarded for riches on earth, when spiritual truths are exchanged for administrative policies, and executive orders are prioritized over the commands of Jesus, instead of providing hope and joy, Christians may become complicit in replacing the good news of the Gospel with fear-mongering, xenophobia, misogyny, and racist rhetoric. And make no mistake, the unbelieving world sees this.

Martin Luther King stated that “Morality cannot be legislated, but behavior can be regulated. Judicial decrees may not change the heart, but they can restrain the heartless.” There is no denying that from a political perspective, we, as Christians, are called to work towards those ends, but not at the expense of abandoning the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If there is division within our nations it is partially because the Christian Church, as a whole, has failed to adequately reach our nations with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Bringing in legislation that endeavours to counteract that reality isn’t going to change the hearts of those who are not saved. It may indeed restrain, but it will not change hearts. Jesus said that without Me, you can do nothing (John 15:5 NASB). A house built on sand will not stand (Matthew 7:24-27 NASB). This is basic Christianity 101. We’re putting the cart before the horse.

I honestly mean no disrespect to anyone, American or Canadian.

Bandaids only cover a wound, they do not necessarily heal the wound, especially if it has not been cleaned and our nations are indeed wounded and applying bandaids are not going to resolve the core issues that our nations face, namely that as nations, we collectively, are turning even more progressively away from God, than we previously were. The Bible tells us that there will be a great falling away and we are seeing it unfold before our very eyes.

Please take the time to read his post and consider the truth that it contains, which is located at the following direct link below:

  1. In the world but not of it. I wouldn’t say a christian shouldn’t vote, but I do find it ridiculous when people find their party is Gods’ party.
I’m in agreement with you Bruce. I see that your post has gotten the article in question a few comments.
    Have a great week.

  2. Hello sir. I understand what you are saying and I understand what the author of the article is saying and I agree that we should always put Jesus first in all things and fulfill the Great Commission. We also need to speak the truth of God’s Word to political and social issues of our time. Even the disciples did that. John the Baptist was arrested and beheaded for telling King Herod it was unlawful for him to have his brother’s wife.

I take issue with this statement you made: “Christians become complicit in replacing the good news of the Gospel with fear-mongering, xenophobia, misogyny, and racist rhetoric. And make no mistake, the unbelieving world sees this.”

There is no fear-mongerng, xenophobia, misogyny, or racist rhetoric coming from the Trump administration or Christians and there never was. Those are lies that have been told by our liberal mainstream media over and over again 24/7 365 days per year ever since he was elected. Liberal dominated CNN are the ones spewing fear-mongering and hatred as they lie about Trump and they refuse to report the truth of all the great things he has done for our country. They are the ones spewing racist hatred with all their hateful race-baiting words as they literally whip up violence against white people, conservatives, Christians, and anyone wearing a red hat. Let’s get that straight. It is the socialist atheist liberals in this country who are causing all the hate. It is sickening what they have done to my country.

It is not racist to protect your borders. The Word says “love always protects.” It is not fear-mongering to talk about the socialist liberals who want to tear up our beautiful Constitution and tear down our borders. It is not hateful to speak the truth about how the globalists are using the Islamic invasion as a Trojan horse to tear down the Western world. We must speak the truth of God’s Word to all the issues of our time or else we just let the atheist liberals take over.

The Word exhorts us to fight the good fight. Of course, the Gospel should always be at the forefront, but that does not mean we should not engage politically. We most definitely should vote and get involved for the glory of God! That is a great freedom we should never take for granted!

I pray God smites the wicked liberal agenda in my country and in this whole world. I pray He spreads revival and He stops abortion, the gay agenda, and socialism/communism in my country and the world.

For the first time in a very long time, we have a real American President who honors God and even invites Christians into the White House to pray for him and discuss issues! It is truly incredible and a great blessing and I pray he is re-elected! I pray for Trump daily and I ask the Lord to give him wisdom to lead righteously and I pray protection over him. Trump is actually a real American president who loves America and that is why the liberals hate him.

Didn’t mean to leave such a long comment. This is an issue I am very passionate about. We must stand up and never be afraid to speak the truth of God’s Word to society.

    God bless you sir.

    • Hi Ryan, I hear you loud and clear. I never said not to vote, not did I say not to work towards legislation that honours God. I think I will stop there. I respect your opinion. I may not agree with all of the points you raised but this post was published to draw attention to the Great Commission that all Christians are asked to honour, along with the manner in which we fulfill this obligation, that also should honour God, even as it extends to how we conduct ourselves, with others, as it and when it, applies to politics. You take issue with my statement that you quoted. Understood. My apologies to you if I offended you, that was not my intent. I served 35 years with the Canadian Armed Forces, a number of times alongside our American counterparts. I am acutely aware of the freedoms we enjoy and the cost of their attainment. I sincerely meant no disrespect. Grace, peace and blessings to you and yours. – Bruce

      • Hi Ryan, me again. I just finished reading ‘Real Talk 2019”. There’s a lot of inferences in that post that I agree with. The coming World Order, Socialism etc. And you’re right, Satan is having a field day, no doubt about it. A lot of the things you mention are happening in Canada too. I don’t know if you are familiar with a book called “The Cross and the Switchblade” by David Wilkerson. David passed away just a few years ago but he was instrumental in making inward momentum with some of the gangs of New York City. They were “divided” much like the United States is as a whole today. The reason I bring that book up is that there was a distinct difference between the tone of his words that brought those gangs together, not to mention, some of their leaders to Christ and the tone that is currently being articulated today. Nicky Cruz was one of the gang leaders and he actually became a Pastor and I believe still ministers in Florida. I actually met Nicky Cruz many years ago. I read your “Real Talk 2019” post twice. Somewhere along the line we’ve lost that tone. If you’ve never read the book, please do and you will see what I mean. You’ll recall that Jesus actually went to the homes of some of the Pharisees and ate with them. He didn’t write them all off as a group but he actually spent some of His time ministering to them individually and a good number of them ended up becoming believers, especially after His resurrection. The Democrats are people, as are the Republicans. That’s where the “tone” comes into play. If the Church losses sight of that, there never will be any reconciliation. And you can correct me if you think I am wrong but my understanding is that reconciliation is part of the Great Commission. That’s about all I am going to say. Hope you don’t take offence with any of this, if you disagree, then we disagree and I shall endeavour to respect your opinion. Grace, peace and blessings.

      • I have never heard of that book, but that is a great testimony. Yes, we should always love our enemies and speak the truth in love. I don’t hate liberals. I pray for them. That is what I am saying. Speaking these truths to society is not hateful, it is the truth. There is no fellowship between light and dark. We must speak the truth about their evil agenda for our country or we will lose our country.

My wife and I are raising our kids in this mess. We cannot afford to back down. The liberals will not stop until they see America turned into a failed socialist state, just like what California looks like now. We can love the sinner, but hate the sin. I hate their wicked sinful agenda and our society needs to know it is sinful and wicked. The people believing in that agenda need to know it too. I love them by preaching the truth to them.

I do agree we should always preach the truth in love. Nothing I said in my post was hateful. It is bold truth spoken in love that needs to be heard in our time. I always reach out to unbelievers and let them know they can be reconciled to God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Thanks for reading my post and commenting. I’ll have to read that book someday.

        God bless!
