The Way, The Truth and The Life

John 14:6 NASB

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Living in the physical material world and maintaining our focus on the realities of the spiritual realm is seldom easy, yet that is exactly what God our Father, through His Son Jesus, asks us to do. Yet no one can deny that these times that we are all facing, are becoming increasingly difficult and there is much uncertainty and injustice all around us.

I don’t know about you but when I pray, I ask to be grounded in Jesus, to be able to have Him live in me more than I live in me. I ask for his guidance in all that I do, I ask for His wisdom to discern and love like He does. And yet, in spite of these heartfelt prayers, I still come face to face with my own inadequacies almost everywhere I turn. Be it thoughts in my mind or words that come out of my mouth or fears I have for those whom I love and are not yet saved.

But these quoted words above are the words that Jesus spoke. These words came out of His mouth. He told us that He is the way, that He is the truth and that He is the life and I believe Him.

And I can’t help but feel a certain amount of empathy with Peter when Jesus asked the twelve disciples if they too would stop following Him and Peter responded, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68).

Empathy, why empathy? Because I surely don’t have answers to all of my questions and I have yet to see a number of my heart felt prayers answered and there are still too many times when the turmoil around me or my own selfishness, causes me to lose focus on Jesus and I start to slip into the waves.

Yet, I still cling to these words.

Jesus is the way. I know that beyond a doubt.
Jesus is the truth, I believe this with all of my heart.
And Jesus is the life, I trust in this because I know that without Him, there is nothing in me that deserves life. He is the source of life, eternal life, He has proved this with His words, His deeds and the complete sacrifice of Himself.

Can you imagine any other man saying these words and anyone taking that man seriously?
Can you imagine any other man even just saying these words?
Yet Jesus did.

And I know why Jesus is the way, because Jesus said He was and our Heavenly Father confirmed it and because no one else could have done what Jesus did for us, no one, especially ourselves.
And I know why Jesus is the truth, because Jesus said He was and the words that Jesus spoke testify to all of God’s Word about the coming Messiah and how Jesus alone fulfilled God the Father’s will.
And I know why Jesus is the life, because Jesus said He was and proved it through His own resurrection and the Apostles witnessed to this reality, coupled with Jesus’ promise, not to leave us as orphans, as witnessed to by God’s indwelling Holy Spirit, to those who believe.

Material and Spiritual Realities

So what I do is remind myself that even though I, in my spirit, still walk in this material world, in this physical body, with some acknowledged unanswered questions and even some unanswered prayers, along with the inner awareness that Christ’s formation in me is still yet to be fully realized, while I inhabit this sinfully prone body, I nevertheless also know and understand, that because I believe and trust in Jesus, I am indeed already complete in Him and that because He lives, as He has promised, I and those of us who believe in Him, shall also live.

And all of this, all of this, is solely possible because Jesus and Jesus alone is indeed, the way, the truth and the life.

Worthy is the Lamb! Blessings!
