What Things are an Abomination to God?

Proverbs 6:16-19 NASB

“There are six things which the Lord hates,
Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
And hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that run rapidly to evil,
A false witness who utters lies,
And one who spreads strife among brothers.”

I find that it is strange how this particular Scripture is often used to validate that God rightly detests the shedding of innocent blood, which is easily and correctly associated with the taking of innocent lives in abortions, yet the other six things or characteristics are too frequently overlooked.

HAUGHTY EYES – When a person is haughty, they have a big attitude and act like they are better than other people. A haughty person acts superior, boasts of their own abilities and looks down on others.  Haughty people can be disdainful, overbearing, prideful, bullies, and obnoxious.

A LYING TONGUE – Simply defined, a lie is a statement (or act) that is made (or carried out) with the deliberate goal of deceiving or misleading. Lying involves intent; it involves “conceiving and uttering from the heart”. Lying intends not only to deceive for their own gain, but to hurt others by deception.

HANDS THAT SHED INNOCENT BLOOD – The phrase “innocent blood” appears in the Bible 17 times, with only one of those occurrences in the New Testament (Matthew 27:3-4) and it is a reference to murder, which can easily be associated with the taking of innocent lives with the act of an abortion of a unborn child.

A HEART THAT DEVISES WICKED PLANS – The “heart” in the Bible is the core of the human person. It is from the heart that “the issues of life” flow (Proverbs 4:23, NKJV). “A heart that devises wicked plans” therefore speaks of a person who deliberately plans to act wickedly, who spends his/her time devising wickedness to perform.

FEET THAT RUN RAPIDLY TO EVIL – This is a person who expends great energy in their pursuit of evil or wickedness, who protects, savours and delights in evil.

A FALSE WITNESS WHO UTTERS LIES – This speaks of a person who utters falsely in any matter, lying, equivocating, and in any way devising and designing to deceive our neighbour. Speaking unjustly against our neighbour, to the prejudice of his/her reputation.

ONE WHO SPREADS STRIFE AMONG BROTHERS – This is a person who spreads strife or discord among friends or family. Someone who divides rather than fostering unity within.

ALL of these things or characteristics are an abomination to God.

Worthy is the Lamb! Blessings!

  1. Wow. Good scripture for me today. I was writing about George Floyd suggesting his death had nothing to do with him being black for the most part but about what Jordan Peterson talks about on other topics. He says that people degenerate ethically to a point until they take part in Atrocities.
As we devalue people because they did us wrong or make stupid moves we can decouple and when someone becomes a danger, loud and resistive we can ignore them, tune them out and not let go of a choke hold or a knee on a neck. parents do it, Judges do it. Teachers do it. Some times it comes out as “I am not going to listen to You any longer” as people lose patience see someone as stupid, want them to stop we then want to act to force them to stop. We start to ignore.

I think the above scripture has meaning behind it. There are motives and progressive steps behind each of them where someone bit by bit accepts a different way of thinking and behaviour. And I think there is a general point to these verses. you have a condition that affects things. And a singular event may be a one off, but it also may be part of a condition of who you have become.

    • Who you have become or who you are. I find it extremely difficult to comprehend how anyone who displays these characteristics, who at the same time, is being portrayed as the chosen means whereby one of these abominations is hoped to be corrected, is validated by Scripture as the manner in which God sometimes works, which would include the Persian leader Cyrus. Knoedler Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Wheaton College refers: https://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2018/october-web-only/donald-trump-cyrus-prophecy-old-testament.html

      • this video shows me egg heads are playing with the very nature of how we are permitted to think trying to construct our way. More and more the Bible and scriptures like this cut through their picking at details (which can be valuable) but the scripture like this cuts to the heart of the issue. Anyone really reading these verse needs to stop and deconstruct them.
when I read the audio bible, you just cant run over proverbs it requires to much contemplation. And while I see some of the statements in Proverbs to be superficial and more like a random list off of something, proverbs 6 and the 7things God hates really is above egg head level constructs.

      • those who spend their lives in academia who try to grasp why people say what they say, how things work, the motives and what you then should do about it thinking then they can bring in policies that everyone else will agree too. Some are more practical than others but as you see from that video they start picking apart whole trains of thought just on unconscious bias. When you add in the complexity of just about everything you then are a Egg head. And some of these universities produce some then feel they are superior and then will try and rule thinking they can mastermind global change.
So an activist Egg head may spear head the black lives movement or fund Trump or fun Biden for a reason trying to get a result thinking that the world is their chess board because of their serious more complex thinking that in their minds is above everyone elses thinking. Thats a Activist Egg head.

  2. Thanks, Bruce. Good message. Back in the 1980s, our independent fundamental Baptist pastor used to constantly rail against certain “pet sins” such smoking, drinking, and homosexuality, to the exclusion of many other sins mentioned in the Bible. At the same time, arrogance and great pride were constantly on display behind the pulpit. I don’t think a person was allowed to graduate from IFB seminary unless they were cocky, arrogant, and bullyish.

    • Well I can’t speak to that but the convergence of politics and Christianity isn’t furthering God’s Kingdom from my perspective. The precepts of Christianity and the precepts of politics are at odds with each other. Christianity is about humility and submission, while politics are about pride and power. Politics and power corrupt, as history clearly show us. Mixing it with Christianity only leads to trouble, which is clearly self evident.

      • I found it insightful that six of the seven abominations are the very means by which the seventh is trying to be achieved, in the name of some within white evangelical Christianity. Key word being “some”. I can’t possibly change what is happening but I can, with God’s grace, try not to add to it.
