Our Father, Who is in Heaven, Hallowed Be Your Name

Sometimes, I don’t think we adequately comprehend the beauty and wonder that is revealed when Jesus tells us that “He who sees Me, has seen the Father” (John 14:8-9). All that Jesus said and all that Jesus did, flowed from God, our heavenly Father. And Jesus tells us this, over and over again. One could easily say that for Jesus, God the Father is His focal point, always, continually, without exception. Just the mere fact that Jesus could consistently do that, in all that He said and all that He did, should alert us to the beauty and love that exists between God the Father and God the Son.

There is one particular verse in Scripture that encapsulates for me, that “oneness” that exists between the Father and the Son and it is found in Hebrews 1:3-4 NASB and reads as follows: “And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, to the extent that He has inherited a more excellent name than they.” Emphasis is mine.

The concept of God dwelling among His chosen people, unfolds in the Old Testament, especially around the physical reality of the Tabernacle, for what I call, the “common” person. But that visualization of God dwelling among the people was hidden behind obstructions that represented what separated a Holy God from sinful man. But then of course, we have individuals such as Abraham and Moses, who through God’s grace, in spite of those barriers, because of their faith and trust in God, were permitted to “see” a representation of God, such as the “Angel of the Lord” as an example, face to face. But not so for the “common” man. And although I know I am skipping over much that is revealed within the Old Testament, that revealing of God our Father, was only in part, until God in His wisdom and love, sent us His promised Redeemer Son.

When Jesus said, “He who has seen Me, has seen the Father“, it should have been a light bulb moment for everyone. And it wasn’t like Jesus was hiding this reality, because at every opportunity, Jesus pointed this out. But even His disciples missed it up until that moment and we still miss it today.

When Jesus taught us how to pray (Matthew 6:9-13), the prayer that Jesus gave us begins with, “Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed by your name“. “Hallowed”, as used in The Lord’s Prayer, means holy, consecrated, sacred, or revered. We don’t hear that word being used much any more. But such is the connotation that Jesus affixed to the reality of His Father and our Father. And that “hallowed” due to our heavenly Father, hasn’t changed.

Today is when our society celebrates the various positive attributes of those who are our earthly fathers and for lack of better words, that is all good stuff and I have written about this before. But as Jesus showed us, time and time again, in truth, we only have one Father, and for the vast majority of us who wear that name, there are many differences between our earthly fathers and our heavenly Father. And those differences are personified in the person of God the Son.

“Hallowed” be your name, heavenly Father, and thank you for sending us Your Son.
Thank you Jesus, for revealing to us, of our heavenly Father.
Thank you Holy Spirit of God for revealing to us of our Father and the Son, through God’s Holy Word.

Worthy is the Lamb! Blessings!
